What an amazing conference in Houston!

At the CS4TX State Meeting during this conference we received a proclamation from the mayor to Celebrate CS Education week in December. Calling on all to help.  Please join CS4TX Houston to find out how.

WHEREAS, in a world increasingly dependent on technology, computer science knowledge and skills are crucial to every student’s education, only two percent of Texas high school graduates have taken a computer science course and only 5,172 high school students in Texas took the AP Computer Science exam in 2015; and,

WHEREAS, much is being done to improve the existence of computer science education, most notably, Computer Science for Texas (CS4TX) is leading a grassroots statewide effort to educate all Texas about the value of K-12 computer science education; and,

WHEREAS, in addition, today, women fill close to half of all jobs in the U.S. economy but hold less than 25 percent of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) jobs. The American Association of University Women (AAUW), founded in 1881, is an organization that serves as the nation’s leading voice for promoting equity and education for women and girls; and,

WHEREAS, during the week of December 5-11, 2016, CS4TX Houston and AAUW West Harris County Branch will celebrate Computer Science Education Week by supporting an hour of code to education students about computer science for one hour. Computer Science Education Week is observed in celebration of Grace Murray Hopper, a major female contributor to computer science. The observance also raises awareness about the need for improving and strengthening computer science education; and,

WHEREAS, the City of Houston is a strong supporter of STEM initiatives and commends Computer Science for Texas, American Association of University Women, National Center for Women & Information Technology and other Houston supporting organizations and businesses for their leadership in STEM education.

THEREFORE, I Sylvester Turner, Mayor of the City of Houston, hereby proclaim December 5-11, 2016, as COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATION WEEK In Houston, Texas.
